PHOTOGRAPHS AS A HEDGE AGAINST TIME
A VIEW CAMERA TO SLOW DOWN AND SEE MORE
I came to do what I do because growing up I loved books, comics and magazines that combined images and texts. Movies gave me a passion for strong visual narratives. Later, as a professional documentary film maker, I developed story-telling of a realistic kind. However, the direction I now pursue in my personal narrative still photography is a departure from a documentary sensibility.
Often an environment or an object will inspire me to explore an undefined emotion I’ve been mulling over. The resulting images bring into focus what I didn’t know I felt. Sometimes I add a text as a pointer to the photos that constitute a story. Easier than hiring a model, I use myself or someone I know as a presence in the pictures. My hope is that the photo stories will find resonance in the thoughts and feelings of those who view them.
